Potential uses of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) to offset emissions: the 2014 FIFA World Cup example
The Embassy of Brazil in London and the Brazilian Chamber of Commerce cordially invite you to attend an event to showcase the experience of the Brazilian Government in successfully offsetting carbon emissions of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, through the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol.
Who should attend: policy-makers and professionals in the areas of Climate Change, Carbon Markets and Sustainability.
The event will discuss actions by governments to promote the voluntary cancellation of certified emission reductions (CERs) from the CDM, across a variety of activities such as major events, while also exploring the potential use of the CDM by the private sector, the civil society and policy-makers, including the international shipping and aviation sectors.
The Brazilian Government initiative during the 2014 FIFA World Cup encouraged companies holding CERs to donate them with a view to offsetting carbon emissions from construction and renovation of stadia, consumption of fossil fuels from official and public transportation, and other sources. Through the voluntary cancellation of CERs donated by the companies, Brazil was able to offset over 545,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, more than the entire direct greenhouse gas emissions arising from the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Keynote speakers will include representatives from the CDM Executive Board and organizations such as UNFCCC (UN Framework Convention on Climate Change), ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) and IETA (International Emissions Trading Association)
